Our first 3 weeks in the RV

We have been living in the RV full time for 3 weeks as of this past Sunday. So far, it’s been a learning experience, but a good one overall. We finally have everything put away (so we can finally record a video walk-through), and we all pretty much remember where everything goes. Getting the kids to remember to put things back where they belong is still a struggle, but at least they have a place to put them.

We are also adjusting back to hand-washing the dishes. It’s amazing how much you take things like a dishwasher for granted. We tried to institute the rule that if you dirty a dish, you immediately wash it, but it hasn’t quite worked out that way. Still, we stay on top of it by doing dishes 2 or 3 times per day, to avoid a sink full of dishes.

Having a washer and dryer has been great. While the RV park we are staying at has a laundry facility, it’s been nice to be able to laundry while I work from home, and not have to worry about running out of quarters. The w/d hookups are in a small closet in the master bedroom, and keeping the door shut keeps the noise to a tolerable enough level that I can still work in the master bedroom. The spin cycle does shake the entire RV, however, so that’s fun to get used to.

Working from the RV has been interesting. The walls and doors aren’t quite as sound-resistant as a normal house. However, with everyone working at home these days (thanks to the pandemic), people seem fine with a little more background noise than used to be considered normal. I’m using my hotspot as an internet connection, and it generally works quite well. There are some times that it will just slow down for no obvious reason, but I’ve been able to work through it. I intend to eventually get a second hotspot, from a different carrier, that I can use if we end up in a place where the first one doesn’t work. I also have my smartphone, that can be used in a pinch.

The kids have been spending a lot more time outdoors, which was one of the prime reasons we wanted to have this particular lifestyle. I’m grateful that they are doing it willingly. I would love to spend more time outside myself, but after working from home all day, I’ve found myself with plenty of other chores around the RV and our old house to keep me pretty busy. Once the house sale is finalized, we should have more free time for family activities in the evenings.

I have put together two new pages that I intend to keep updating. The first is a list of the issues we’ve had with the RV since owning it, and can be found here:

Issues

The second is a list of improvements we’ve made to the RV to make our lives easier or less cluttered, and can be found here:

Improvements

Since we’re going to be in Sanger for a while, we’ve started trying out the local food. So far, we’ve been quite impressed with the local BBQ joint.
