Yesterday, we closed on the sale of our house. We are now officially a family of nomads, though without the capability of moving our home-on-wheels just yet. I look forward to the day we purchase our truck and become truly mobile.
Given the risks inherent in purchasing and moving into an RV, before even listing our house for sale, and all of this during a global pandemic, I think we got pretty lucky. Our house was under contract within a few days of going on the market. We were able to get the initial bugs worked out in our full-time RV living experience, without much extra expense. And, we have been able to get sufficient internet bandwidth available for me to successfully work from the RV.
Now that we won’t have a house payment to worry about, saving for the property and truck should be much easier. We are finding that our electric bill is about the same in the 400 square feet of RV as it was in our 2000+ square foot house, though a big portion of that is because the rates are about 50% higher in the RV park than we were paying at the house. Still, we don’t have to worry about a city water bill, and in Texas, that does add up ($100-$200 per month).
Aside from a few more minor purchases we intend to make, we have the RV fully kitted out, as the expression goes. We have even decided that some of the kitchen items we brought with us are now candidates for the storage unit, as we just don’t see ourselves using them very often. The next challenge will be getting the RV to the proper travelling weight. I expect that a few more items will have to get taken to storage before all is said and done.
